How to get there
Taking the old adage, “all roads lead to Rome” as their example, the members of the tourism community say, “Many roads lead to us, and one of the most important is the Limes, straight from ancient Rome”. Whether by plane, bus or train, by car, bicycle or quite simply on foot – the Swabian Forest is easy to reach.
In order to ensure the greatest recreational and experiential value, we definitely recommend arriving with public transport or by bicycle; within the tourist area, regional buses and cycling paths ensure good connections. The following overview shows all the connections arranged by type.
By train
The Swabian Forest is linked via Stuttgart with the long-distance trains of the Deutsche Bahn AG. Coming from Stuttgart main station in the west, you can reach your destination station Schorndorf with the Remsbahn (R2) or the destination stations Oppenweiler, Sulzbach und Murrhardt with the Murrbahn (R2). In Gaildorf and Aalen in the east, these lines have connections to Nuremberg, Augsburg and Ulm. In the regional train network, central points such as Schorndorf and Backnang are connected directly with Stuttgart airport via Stuttgart main station on the lines S2 and S3. From Schorndorf, the auxiliary line (R21) “Das Wiesel” leads directly to the foot of the Swabian Forest, Rudersberg (information under www.vvs.de). On Sundays, the Swabian Forest Railway runs from Rudersberg to Welzheim.
By bus
Numerous bus routes connect not only the communities of the Swabian Forest with the stations of the Rems and Murr train lines, but also enable connections between the communities on the heights and in the valleys (www.vvs.de). During the summer months – from May 1 until October 29 – the tourist buses run to many popular sights on Sundays and holidays. On the “Tag des Schwäbischen Waldes” (Swabian Forest Day) genuine old-timer buses are pressed into service.
By bicycle
Cyclists can expect to discover an Eldorado for cycling in the Swabian Forest. Important local cycling tracks such as the “Remstal-Radwanderweg", "Murrtal-Radwanderweg" and the "Kocher-Jagst-Radwanderweg" are linked with the long-distance cycling trails Neckartal, Alb-Neckar and Hohenlohe-Ostalb. The German Limes Cycling Track runs north and south straight through the hills and valleys of the recreational region. This is complemented by circular routes such as the "Wieslaufradwanderweg" and the "Leintalradwanderweg". The Swabian Forest also offers superb mountain bike routes. More information here!
By car
The Swabian Forest lies between the north-south axes of the A7 and the A81 and the east-west axes of the A6 and the A8. It is also connected to the highways B14, B19, B29 and B298.
