Even Charlemagne was supposed to have undertaken the pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago.  “I’m off then”, wrote the German humourist Hape Kerkeling 1,200 years later, thereby unleashing a flood of emulators. He described his tour very entertainingly in his book, and pilgrims and more pilgrims followed his example.
