Along the Limes in the Swabian Forest
The Upper Germanic Rhaetian Limes is the largest archaeological monument in Europe and a cultural and historical treasure of the greatest significance. Comprising 120 forts and almost 900 watchtowers, the wall stretches for 550 kilometres between the Rhine and Danube rivers. Since 2005, the Upper Germanic Rhaetian Limes has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites “Borders of the Roman Empire” – a distinction that also imposes a duty.
Today, the Limes is like a string of pearls, linking ancient points of interest thematically with one another. The World Heritage Site runs through the Rems-Murr district for roughly 32 kilometres.
The Limes hiking trail leads past the excavated remains of walls, restored and reconstructed watchtowers, remains or replicas of forts and milestones.
