Technical Museum Oil Mill Michelau

The oil mill, built in 1754, was renovated towards the end of the 1980s. It is regarded as the oldest oil mill in Baden Württemberg, and on the ground floor offers visitors insight into how oil was extracted here from linseed, walnuts, beechnuts, pumpkin seeds and rapeseed up until 1955.

However, in its final productive years, the mill was driven by a motor as in 1928 a flood swept away the wooden Michelau weir leaving the miller high and dry. In 1959, the millrace was completely filled in during a period of reallocation of land.

Today the oil mill is a hands-on museum. The children are allowed to work the apparatuses, try out the weaving loom, and run their hands over the impressive millstone. Only in this way can a lasting impression of daily life at the mill in times past be imparted.

A flax museum has been installed in the attic of the oil mill, with the main emphasis on demonstrating how the entire flax plant was processed to linseed oil and linen. A show garden in the outdoor area with flax plants rounds off the exhibit.
